"The Roses"

2025 * R * 1h 45m  Any film that stars Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch has got to be good. I've heard that this was a remake of an older film and it wasn't as good as the original. But that's fine. I thought this one was quite entertaining.

The film starts out with the couple in a therapy session. It would appear that they're at the end of their marriage and essentially, their therapist tells them that they're done. Which takes them by surprise. Then the film jumps back in time and we see them first meeting and the early part of their marriage. Theo Rose (Cumberbatch) is an architect and Ivy Rose (Colman) is an amazing cook. So with a great deal of encouragement, Ivy opens a restaurant which becomes hugely successful. Meanwhile Theo creates a unique building on the coast. When a devastating storm hits, it completely destroys his creation and thanks to social media, he's known around the world for his epic failure.

Theo is consigned to raising their children while Ivy opens several new restaurants and is a big success in the culinary world. The tension slowly builds until an outrageous ending with an absolutely over the top fight scene. I'm including a trailer, but if you want to be surprised at just how crazy the final battle is, don't watch it.

3 1/2 out of 5 stars
