"The Annihilation of Fish"

1999 * R * 1h 48m I saw this film mentioned on a critic's list of new movies worth watching. Well, it turns out it's not new at all, but was recently cleaned up and rereleased. Not sure why I've never heard of it but with a cast that includes James Earl Jones, Lynn Redgrave, and Margot Kidder, it simply had to be good. And it is!

Talk about a wacky plot. Fish (Jones) has just been released from a mental hospital. He hasn't responded to treatment for a disorder where he's visited by an invisible wrestler who constantly engages him in matches. Then there's Poinsettia (Redgrave) who has her own invisible partner. It's none other than Giaccamo Puccini, the famous and long dead opera composer. As fate would have it, they end up in the same apartment complex, which is run by Mrs. Muldroone (Kidder) who's a character as well.

The three offbeat characters have great fun together. Among the various antics is when Poinsettia volunteers to be the referee in Fish's knockdown wrestling matches with his invisible opponent! If you're looking for a unique and zany filmgoing experience, put this one in your queue. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
